Although he has been on the scene for a while, Kid Cudi has brought his new sound mainstream, which fuses alternative rock, hip-hop and R&B. ("Kid Cudi Biography," 2009). Born in Cleveland, Ohio he has lived in Brooklyn for the past 3 years, which probably had a significant impact on him. The lyrics he uses in his songs can hit people emotionally, and get them involved. In order for someone to open up like he has in his songs either takes a lot of courage, or he just knows that other people feel the same way.
William Modisane lived in South Africa until the destruction of Sophiatown in 1958, and moved to Britain and became an actor who appeared in many controversial plays by Athol Fugard. ("William Modisane," 2002). Shortly after that, he became a play writer, and an author in general, he wrote about things that have happened in his life all written under his pen name Bloke Modisane, he died in 1986 in Dortmund West Germany.
The song Day ‘n’ Nite by Kid Cudi (Appendix A), and the poem Lonely by Bloke/ William Modisane (Appendix B) focuses on emotions to captivate either the reader or listener. Since emotions are what drive some people, both of these pieces of art are very captivating.
These works also share similarities and differences. The theme of the song is about a man who is lonely “The lonely stoner seems to free his mind at nite He’s all alone through the day n nite”. The theme of the poem is also about being lonely “it gets awfully lonely, lonely;” They also both focus on getting someone that person can’t have for whatever reason.” The girl he wants don’t seem to want him too. It seems the feelings that she had are through. Through.” And in the poem, “like it's for you I scream.” Repetition is prevalent throughout pieces, the word “nite” in the song and many words in the poem, like “lonely”, “shout” and more. They both have conflict; man versus self. Stated in the song; “Day n nite. I toss and turn; I keep stressin’ my mind, mind.” And in the poem “I talk to myself when I write, shout and scream to myself, then to myself scream and shout: shouting a prayer, screaming noises, knowing this way I tell the world about still lives; even maybe just to scream and shout.” Both of these show that the writer is having a hard time with himself and with what is going on around him. Last but not least, both of these pieces of art have imagery. In the song it shows “The sun is shinin’ man he’s super cool.” This would leave a picture for the listener of a cool looking guy in the sun. In the poem, “but you hear me clear and loud: echoing loud; like it's for you I scream.” This has an effect of showing people what is going on by using sounds, like screaming and echoing.
These pieces of work also have contrasts that make them different from each other. The point of view for both, start off with first person point of view. Shown in the song; “Day n nite. I toss and turn; I keep stressin’ my mind, mind. I look for peace, but see I don’t attain.” There are many I’s in this. From the poem “like it's for you I scream.” The use of the I. But after some time, the point of view of the song changes into third person “The lonely stoner missed his solo doe low. He’s on the move, can’t seem to shake the shade. Within his dreams he sees the life he made.” Just like that the song went from talking about himself, to what could be another person. Both of the pieces have different things that the other doesn’t have. In the song there is Onomatopoeia when he says “A silent sleeper, you won’t hear a peep, peep.” And obviously the word peep sounds like what is said, peep. In the poem there is Alliteration when he says “scream and shout:” They both start with an “s”. There isn’t any in the song. A last literary element is a metaphor, and there are two in the song that are recognizable, “He seems alive, though he is feeling blue. The sun is shinin man he’s super cool.”
Since emotions are what drive some people, both of these pieces of art are very captivating. The poem “Lonely” by William Modisane and song “Day ‘n’ Night by Kid Cudi have overall the same theme, loneliness, and focus on people’s emotions. These pieces also share; repetition, conflict, and imagery along with the theme as I have stated above. These pieces have differences in point of view, only the song has onomatopoeia and a metaphor, and just the poem has alliteration. When a piece of work grabs your emotions, it usually is an interesting thing to pay attention to. It is up to you if you want to pay attention to it since most people don’t seem to pay attention to their emotions anymore.
