Have you ever been on “Who Wants to be a Millionaire”? More than likely not, but you have watched it at home, screaming the answers at the television, admit it. Well Jamal Malik was on this show in India. His story will captivate your heart.
Slumdog Millionaire is this movie. The director, Danny Boyle does what he can to make this movie hit a place in the viewers’ heart. The actor who plays Jamal, Dev Patal could hopefully make it big in Hollywood, or at least Bollywood. He is the younger brother looking for the love of his life. The actor who plays Salim, Madhur Mittal makes his character a bad man, but also relatable which has been expected in newer movies. The actress who plays Latika, the love of Jamal’s life, is Freida Pinto; she is one of the main attractions of the movie making everything lighter and more fun. Overall this movie is 3 out of 5 stars. Not loveable, but you can’t hate it either, just a movie that should be watched by everyone.
Salim and Jamal are brothers, after something very much unexpected happens they are on their own. Many different things happen to them and they get out of it the best they can. But living in the slums of Mumbai, India isn’t the best place to be. After they have grown up and have jobs, Jamal decided to go on the game show “Who wants to be a Millionaire” because everyone in India gathers to watch the show, he is trying to get Latika to find him. Jamal is one of those guys who you just can’t hate but there is nothing particularly special about him. Salim on the other hand, you know from the beginning he is mischievous and causes problems, which foreshadows the things that happens throughout the movie. Latika is just a whole different story, throughout the movie you feel sorry for her, and the ending is just amazing everything fixes itself. But going back to basics, the general gist of the movie is that Jamal wins a million dollars and causes the government to be suspicious of him. Overall, the theme is to never underestimate yourself or others.
This movie has an eclectic soundtrack, even though it takes place in India, of course is has Hindu music, but there’s also hip hop music and even some Spanish music. Throughout the film, the cinematographer did an excellent job in captivating the audience’s attention. Using wide angles and focusing in on something very quickly. It could be compared to the movie Citizen Kane although not the same, but it is similar to it.
Overall it is a pretty good movie, definitely a movie to watch. It brings a good message to people, if you have kids it would be good to show them, just as a forewarning there is violence and some language but you can fast forward those parts. But just the way the movie feels seems like a good message to give your kids, go for your dreams no matter what, and you just might reach them. This is a movie that you will not necessarily love but you will not hate it either. There is a really good theme which can be interpreted in a lot of different ways and just the way this film is shot makes it a must see.
